Important Things To Keep In Mind When Hiring A Video Producer…
I think a problem a lot of people face when considering hiring a video producer is that they think they have to have their whole video idea all planned out before they start talking to us. And the truth is, a lot of what we do is take rough ideas, and shape them into something that will work for you. Whether it’s a short paragraph with an idea or a fully detailed script with shot descriptions, we just need something to go off of.
And there’s a couple of ways to go about this. Don’t come up with content just for the sake of having something to show your editor. Take some time to think about the essentials. If you know the video has to have you or a spokesperson on camera, make sure that’s in there. If you know you need to have some particular graphics in the video, put that in there. But don’t be afraid to tell your producer, “I’d really like to communicate that we’re a friendly business, but am not sure how to go about that”. That’s the kind of thing we love to hear, then we know what you’re going for and it allows us a little creative freedom in how to show it. In that type of situation I would probably go on to say, “I think that’s a great idea and we could go about that a few different ways…”.
Now I have experienced the other side of that coin when people are too vague and think that we can just drum up exactly what they’re looking for when they don’t really know what they’d like. For example, I once had a woman contract me to do a special video to thank their volunteers. Well that was about all the information she gave me, “we need a video to thank our volunteers”. And every time I tried to contact her to get more information on the project she was too busy. Well that video sat on hold for a long time until she realized there does need to be at least some prep work on her part before I can run with the idea. Even if you don’t know what will best visually communicate your message, think about WHAT you want to communicate. Do you want to tell about a new product, do you want to give a brief overview of your services, do you want to inform people of an exciting upcoming event? Specifics like these allow us to be able to come back to you with our ideas on what might work well for that kind of thing.
Believe it or not a lot of our job is not about the technical aspects of how to operate a camera, or how to best cut up the footage in our editing program. But it’s about having an eye for what works, for how people receive information. And then taking your idea and shaping it into something that will really make an impact and hit home with your viewers.
And the best part is the ideas are free, contact us today with what you’d like to do and let us get back to you with what kind of video we think would best fit for you. If you like it, great! We’ll get to work. If not, we could come back with some more ideas or you’re free to move on with no consulting fees. We all have different tastes and preferences and we understand that, we just hope you’ll give us the opportunity to speak to what might work for you.
